Always trust your senses. Never ignore an unusual smell or a sound. An unusual smell from any system is a signal that something is definitely wrong. Check the source of the smell and take care of it right away. A minor gas leak or HVAC system can lead to gas poisoning which could prove to be fatal if not taken otherwise.
