After completing their bachelor’s degree in India, Indian students can pursue a graduate certificate or diploma in Canada. In India, these courses are equal to the Post Graduate Diploma. As a result, many students in Canada refer to these programmes as Post Graduate Diploma.
The majority of Graduate Certificate programmes can be completed in eight months to a year (two semesters). Only a few Graduate Certificate programmes last two years.
Graduate Certificate and Diploma programmes in Canada are intensive, highly targeted programmes designed to educate students with the knowledge and abilities necessary to enter a certain employment sector. These programmes cover a wide range of occupations. For example, a one-year graduate certificate degree in marketing will provide you with the required abilities to pursue a career in marketing.
These postgraduate diplomas in Canada may qualify you to pursue a Master’s degree in Canada. Many students in India pursue a three-year bachelor’s degree, which is insufficient to pursue a master’s degree in Canada. Many Indian students choose to take a PG Diploma in Canada (rather than MCom Part 1 or another Master’s degree) and then go on to complete their Master’s degree. Work during Canada study visa permit
- On-campus employment
Students may work for their college or university for up to 20 hours a week. Working at a cafeteria or the Athletic Centre are two examples of typical on-campus jobs. However, these positions are limited and are normally awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Only a few students are hired each semester, so don’t expect to work on campus during your first semester. Typically, students who applied during the previous semester fill all of the positions. Working on campus does not require a work permit.
- Off campus employment
You may be able to work off campus without a work permit if you meet certain criteria. If you meet the requirements, your study permit will allow you to work a total of 20 hours per week and a maximum of 40 hours per week during holidays.
- Spouse work permit Canada
If you are a full-time student with a valid study permit, your spouse may apply for an open work permit (which means they do not require a job offer or a Labour market evaluation from Service Canada). Spouse’s work permits are valid for the same amount of time as your study permit.
- Internship work
Within the academic year, co-op programmes involve regular times of employment in allied industry. These are usually paid occupations, and they may be required for graduation. A few graduate certificate courses offered at numerous schools across Canada provide a co-op option, which entails 3- to 4-month internships. This provides you the advantage of working in the real world and implementing what you’ve learned in class. Most students who intern at a corporation are quickly absorbed into the company after their internship is completed. After you have received a study permit while attending college, you must apply for a co-operative education work permit. International student centers/advisors at the college / university where you are studying can assist you with this.

A student may return to the country for the duration of their programme, up to a maximum of three years, to look for work and work full-time. Within six months of graduation, over 90% of Canadian college graduates are hired in their field of study, and 93 percent of employers are satisfied with graduates. Depending on the length of the programme, the stay back option for Graduate Certificate courses ranges from 8 months to 1 year. In the case of Graduate Diploma courses that last two years, you have the option of staying back for an additional three years.
